MALE, October 29, 2007 (Haveeru News Service) – Local bodyboarders are trying to revive bodyboarding which traditionally is seen as the extreme sort of surfing using boogie boards. Surfing is traditionally seen as more of a soulful sport. During the Fitr Eid festival which came after last Ramadan, the Maldives Surfing Association revived the Gorilla private bodyboarding contest, the brainstorm of young bodyboarder Shiunyl. Sponsored by Rajje Online, the internet service provider Focus Info Com, the title went to former national bodyboarding champion Ali “Kuda Ayya” Khushruwan. The second place winner was the current national bodyboarding champion Ibrahim “Dhayyu” Shiman while the second runner-up was Adam “Nippe” Nishaz. The Rookie of the Year award went to Abulho, a protégé of Kuda Ayya and a newcomer from Haa Dhaalu atoll Kulhudhuffushi island which has a surfing point. Sources said that the presently inactive Maldives Surfing Association plans to hold the national surfing and bodyboarding championships next month.
